Pink Flowers by Horrid Red
I know it probably doesn’t look so, but I’m a big fun of lo-fi post-punk, and the Pink Flowers EP by Horrid Red simply hits the spot.
Here’s the story: a friend of mine has this “CD club” where he sends 30 MP3s each month to the people on his list – tracks vary in style (from singer-songwriter folk to heavy drum’n'bass), but all have something unique to offer. As this is my only source of new music, I always pay attention to every song and play them over and over to make sure that I really like (or dislike) what’s on offer. But, with the Horrid Red track, I didn’t have to listen twice. It was an instant hit.
I have this love-hate thing with musical nostalgia. I suppose it is OK to emulate bands from the past as long as one uses them as “guides” and interjects his/her own ideas. There are just too many bands that simply copy one or two “cult” acts from the past and that’s generally accepted.
However, that’s not the case with Horrid Red. Yes, they sound like a strange New Order / Laibach combo, but they also bring a good amount of humour, latent energy and the “I don’t give a fuck” attitude, all mixed with distorted ambient pads, out-of-time drumming, open-key guitars, “totalitarian” chanting and an incredible sense of harmony.
I know nothing about this band except that they’re from San Francisco via Achen, Germany. But, who cares about them. It’s their music that’s brilliant. Have a listen:
